On Saturday night at the Staples Center in L.A., CA, WBC Lightweight champion Mikey Garcia, of Moreno Valley, CA, takes on IBF World Lightweight champion Robert Easter, Jr., of Toledo, OH, in a 12 round unification match promoted by Tom Brown, over Showtime.
Garcia, 38-0 (30), won his title in January of 2017 knocking out Dejan “Dynamite” Zlaticanin, 22-0, in 3 rounds at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, NV. He has not defended this title since. He has won two fights since winning the vacant WBC Diamond Super Lightweight title over Adrien “The Problem” Broner, 33-2, of Cincinnati, OH, over 12 rounds at the Barclay Center, in Brooklyn, New York , in July of 2017.
Then in his next and most recent fight Garcia won the IBF World Super Lightweight title defeating Sergey “Samurai” Lipinets, 13-0, of KAZ and Beverly Hills, CA, over 12 rounds at the Freeman Coliseum, in San Antonio, TX, in March of 2018.
Easter won the IBF World Lightweight title in September of 2016 by split decision over Richard Commey, 24-0, of Accra, GH, at the Santander Arena, in Reading, PA.
Easter has defended his title three times starting with defeating Luis “Artesano” Cruz, 22-4-1, of PR, over 12 rounds at the Huntington Center, in Toledo, OH, in February of 2017. His second defense was defeating Russian Denis “Djingis Khan” Shafikov, 38-2-1, of Big Bear, CA, at the Huntington Center, in Toledo, OH, in June of 2017.
In Easters last defense and most recent bout he defeated former WBA World Super Featherweight champion Dominican Javier Fortuna, 33-1-1, of Braintree, MASS, at the Barclay Center, in Brooklyn, New York, by split decision over 12 rounds, in January of 2018.
Garcia is co-trained by his brother Roberto Garcia and his father Eduardo Garcia, Sr. Easter is co-trained by his father Robert Easter, Sr. and Kevin Cunningham. His manager is Al Haymon.
Garcia is a 4 division world champion coming down in weight and has plans after this match to move back to super lightweight and onto welterweight.
