From the time former Heavyweight Champion Jack “Galveston Giant” Johnson retired in April of 1931 numerous US Presidents said they would pardon him of the Mann Act in 1913 for taking a white woman, Lucille Cameron, across states lines on October 18, 1912. Less than a month later he took Belle Schreider across state lines. She pressed charges. Both women were considered prostitutes. Johnson left the country so he would not do jail time. His last fight in the US was in July of 1912 when he won by DQ9 over Fireman Jim Flynn, 51-15-16.
Last week President Donald Trump pardoned Johnson. For those liberals that call Trump a racist they are eating crow again. During the Republican debate in 2015 seventeen candidates ran. There was only one of “color” and that was Ben Carson. Upon being elected as President Trump has only appointed one of the sixteen people and that was Carson.
Seventeen months after the Flynn fight Jackson would fight Jim Johnson to a D10 in Paris, FR. Johnson would live between Spain and Mexico. In December of 1908 he won the heavyweight title defeating Canadian Tommy Burns, 42-3-8, in Sydney, Australia, stopping him in the fourteenth. He would lose the title to Jesse Willard, 22-5-2, in April of 2015 in Havana, Cuba. It was suspected he threw the fight being stopped in 26 rounds. The picture always shown is Johnson on his back with his arms held up in front of his face and crossed to shield the sun from getting in his eyes.
Johnson would fight in such countries as Canada, France, Argentina, Spain and Mexico. He would return to the US in September of 1926 losing to Brad Simmons. He would go 2-4 including that fight before finishing up in April of 1931. He would be inducted into the IBHOF in 1990. He ended his career at 56-11-8 (35).
