At the Showboat Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, Saturday, Will Ruiz of Hard Hitting Promotions and Matchmaker Manny Rivera presented in the Main Event Philadelphia’s Thomas ‘TJ’ Velasquez was upset by Andrew “New Money” Rodgers. In the co-feature Wesley ‘Jackel’ Ferrer defeated Lonnie Jackson, Jr.
In the Main Event Lightweight Thomas ‘TJ’ Velasquez, 10-2-1 (6), #135.2, of Philadelphia, PA, lost to Andrew “New Money” Rodgers, 6-9-2 (2), #136, of Elkhart, IND, over 6 rounds.
In the first three rounds Velasquez held a slight edge in forcing the fight. In the fourth round Velasquez had an edge in punches landed. In the fifth round Rodgers was credited with a knockdown when Velasquez was driven into the ropes that saved him from going down from referee Esteves. In the sixth and final round Velasquez came back in a close round.
Scores 59-54, 58-55 and 59-54 with this writer 57-56.
Super Lightweight Wesley ‘Jackel’ Ferrer, 15-1-1 (7), #137.8, of Brooklyn, NY, defeated Lonnie “Lightning” Jackson, Jr., 5-2-2 (2), #137.8, of Philadelphia, PA, over 6 rounds scoring one knockdown.
In the second round Ferrer landing a lead right on the chin and down went Jackson in the first thirty seconds of the round. Ferrer let Jackson off the hook the rest of the round with hardly a punch landed from either boxer. In the third round both fighters took each other down with a tackle. Midway both took the referee Ricky Vera down with them.
In the fourth round Ferrer came right out and dropped Jackson with a left hook to the chin for an 8-count. Jackson got up fighting back. Again Ferrer let Jackson off the hook. In the final twenty seconds Ferrer knocked out the mouthpiece of Jackson. In the fifth round what little punches landed Jackson did the most. In the sixth and final round Ferrer jabbed and Jackson grabbed ending one sloppy fight.
Scores were 59-53 58-52 and 59-51. This writer had it 58-55.
Welterweight Tahmir “Sniper” Smalls, 6-0 (3), #143, of Philadelphia, PA, defeated Shaquan Moore, 0-1-1 (0), #142.2, of Coram, NY, over 4 rounds.
In the first 2 rounds Smalls controlled with his jab against Moore. In the third round Smalls used a good body attack to take the round. In the fourth and final round Moore switched back and forth from orthodox to survive but showed heart to fight back best he could
Scores were 40-36 twice and 40-34. This writer had it 40-36.
Heavyweight Rodney “Bad New” Brooks, 2-0 (2), #290, of Atlantic City, NJ, stopped Quamayne Jackson, 0-1 (0), #328, of Winston, NC, at 0:56 of the first round of a scheduled 4 rounds.
In the first round it was all Brooks on the attack until referee Ricky Vera called a halt as Jackson hit the canvas from a flurry of punches from Brooks.
Bantamweight southpaw Joshua Lebron, 2-0 (2), #123, of Orlando, FL, stopped Devon “Soul Snatcher” Lira, 0-3 (0), #122.8, of Davie, FL, at 0:24 of the second round of a scheduled 4 rounds.
In the first round it was a slugfest with Lebron having an edge. In the second round Lebron had Lira out on his feet when referee Glover called a halt.
Welterweight Anthony Demonte, 3-0 (2), #158, of New York, NY, defeated Marquis Hall, 0-2 (0), #159, of Wilmington, DE, over 4 rounds.
In the first round it was all Demonte rocking Hall in the final seconds of the round with a right on the chin. In the second round it was a “dance” by both boxers with what was landed Demonte did.
In the third round referee Benjy Esteves, Jr. took a point from Hall for excessive holding. In the fourth and final round Hall held his way to the end while Demonte landed what little was landed.
Scores were 40-35 by all judges and this writer.
