Ireland’s Lightweight Jono “King Kong” Carroll Wednesday was defeated by Maxi “Maximus” Hughes of Yorkshire, UK, at the Production Park Studios, at South Kirby, Yorkshire, UK, a MTK Global – Lee Eaton, over Top Rank ESPN+.
In the Main Event Lightweight southpaw Jono “King Kong” Carroll, 18-2-1 (4), #137 ¾, of Dublin, Ireland, upset by southpaw Maxi “Maximus” Hughes, 21-5-2 (4), 135, of Yorkshire, UK, over 10 rounds.
In the first seven rounds Carroll controlled. In the last three rounds Hughes came back well with a solid tenth landing several lefts on the chin of Carroll.
Scores were Ian John Lewis 97-93, John Latham and Mark Lyson 96-95 for Hughes. This writer had it 96-94 for Carroll. Victor Loughlin the ref.
“I finally got the win in a close one. Jono is a world class fighter who fought for a world title,” said Hughes. “I am disappointment not taking anything away from Maxie. I just couldn’t get the rhythm and it is just a bump in the road,” said Carroll.
In the co-feature Super Lightweight southpaw “Sugar” Sean McComb, 11-0 (5), #139 of Belfast, No. Ireland, UK, defeated Siar Ozgul, 15-5 (3), #140 ¼, of Turkey and London, UK, over 10 action rounds.
In the first half of the fight the taller southpaw McComb pressed the action using a good jab. In the third round a clash of heads caused a cut over the right eye of McComb. From the fourth through the eighth McComb boxed well controlling the action. In the ninth round an Ozgul left hook re-opened the cut over the right eye of McComb. McComb finished well in the tenth round having boxed well throughout.
Scores were 99-92 and 97-93 twice as did this writer have it. Mark Lyson was the referee.
Super Lightweight Craig MacIntyre, 12-0-1 (6), #143 1/2, of Glasgow, Scotland, UK, stopped Ishmael “Ish” Ellis, 11-3 (0), #141 ¾, of Birmingham, UK, at 2:49 of the fifth in a scheduled 8 rounds.
In the fourth round a left to the body from MacIntyre knocked down Ellis. Referee was John Latham.
Welterweight Sahir Iqbal, 8-0 (1), #147, of Lancashire, UK, defeated Maredudd Thomas, 11-1 (2), #146 ¾, of Cardiff, Wales, UK, over 8 rounds for vacant WBC World Youth title.
In the first four rounds both used effective jabs to set-up rights to chin. In the fifth through the eighth Thomas continued to be the aggressor with Iqbal countering well.
Scores were 77-76, 78-75 and 78-74 with this writer 77-75. John Latham was the referee.
Super Lightweight Pierce “Big Bang” O’Leary, 5-0 (2), #142 ¼, of Dublin Ireland, stopped southpaw Jacob Quinn, 4-1 (0), #141 ¾, of Yorkshire, UK, at 0:21 in a scheduled 4 rounds.
In the fourth round from southpaw landed a straight left on the chin and Quinn went down from a delayed knockdown. He beat the count but referee John Laydon waved it off.
