There have been lists of “old” boxers like “Sugar” Ray Robinson but this list is of the “Modern Times” boxers pound for pound from around 1957.
Heading the list would be the Heavyweight Champion MUHAMMAD “The Greatest” ALI who was 56-5 with 37 knockouts. He defended his title 21 times. Ali was undefeated when he became inactive for a three year period. He was 29-0 when he came back winning a pair of fights before losing for the first time to “Smokin” Joe Frazier. He would defeat Frazier in the two meetings after this. Same with losing his second fight to Ken Norton whom he beat twice after that. He also reversed a loss to Leon Spinks. He was the 1960 Olympic Light Heavyweight Gold Medalist.
He was inducted into the IBHOF.
“Smoking” JOE FRAZIER was the Heavyweight Champion and first to defeat Muhammad Ali. He was 32-4-1 with 27 knockouts. He would lose in their next two fights. He was 29-0 when he lost his title to “Big” George Foreman. He would also lose the rematch.
Frazier was the 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist as a heavyweight.
He was inducted into the IBHOF.
JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ was the Super Featherweight, Lightweight and Junior Welterweight Champion. He was 107-6-2 with 86 knockouts. He was 89-0-1 when he lost for the first time to Frankie “The Surgeon” Randall. He reversed that loss in his next fight and in their third fight. He lost to Oscar De Lay Hoya twice.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 2011.
“Sugar” RAY LEONARD was the Welterweight, Junior Middleweight, Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion. He was 36-3-1 with 25 knockouts. He was inactive for three years due to a detached retina and came back in his first fight to defeat Marvin Hagler for the Middleweight Championship. He stopped Thomas Hearns and they later fought to a draw.
He was the 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 1997.
THOMAS “The Hit Man” HEARNS was the Welterweight, Super Welterweight, Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion. He was 61-5-1 with 48 knockouts.
He was 32-0 when he lost to Leonard.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 2012.
PERNELL “Sweet Pea” WHITAKER was the Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, Welterweight and Junior Middleweight Champion. He was 40-4-1 with 17 knockouts.
He was the 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 2007.
Floyd “Pretty Boy” MAYWEATHER was the Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Super Lightweight, Welterweight and Super Welterweight Champion. His record was 50-0 with 27 knockouts. He had 21 successful title defenses and is still active but not holding any titles.
He was an Olympic Bronze Medalist in 1996.
CARLOS “Escopeta” MONZON was the Middleweight Champion. His record was 87-3 with 59 knockouts. He had 14 successful title defenses.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 1990.
“Marvelous” MARVIN HAGLER was Middleweight Champion. His record was 62-3-2 with 52 knockouts. He defeated Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns. He lost to Ray Leonard and retired.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 1993.
EDER JOFRE was the Bantamweight and Featherweight Champion. He was 72-2-4 with 50 knockouts. He was 47-0-3 when he lost to Flyweight Champion Fighting Harada and again in a rematch.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 1992.
FIGHTING HARADA was the Flyweight and Bantamweight Champion. He was 55-7-2 with 22 knockouts.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 1995.
SALVATORE “Chava” SANCHEZ was the Featherweight Champion. His record was 44-1-1 with 32 knockouts. He was killed at age 23 while still active.
He was inducted into the IBHOF in 1992.
