The Key to Victory: Mayweather vs. Cotto

By: Danny Serratelli

Contrary to popular opinion the fight tonight between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather is going to be a good one. The word on the street is that Floyd is too fast for Cotto. Floyd does a great job in promoting his fights and the result is that most people, even people who know the sport, start to lose their common sense and can be convinced that Floyd is indestructible; in the ring no one is indestructible.

While speed is always a very important factor in a fight and can be the difference in a fight like this, it is often not the determining factor in who will win the fight. Zab Judah and Shane Mosley were both faster than Miguel Cotto and both were defeated by Cotto. Knowledgeable boxing fans know that Miguel Cotto deserves a lot more respect then people have been giving him as he has only been defeated in a fight that was probably tainted against Antonio Margarito (which Cotto avenged) and against Manny Pacquiao.

Unless Cotto is shot, and, at 31 years of age he is about 4 years younger than Floyd, the fight should not only come down to speed. Mayweather has the obvious speed advantage while Cotto will have an obvious size and strength advantage. Floyd
