R.I.P. – Dominick L. Amoroso

Dominick L. Amoroso, 91, born December 8, 1920 in Jersey City, New Jersey, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Febru-ary 23, 2012. Dominick was a proud life long resident of Jersey City and a popular friend and neighbor in the Downtown area. In his early days, Dominick said that trouble would always follow him, so he turned to boxing to defend himself. His dedication and passion for boxing led him to become NJ’s Leading Lightweight Contender, fighting 82 professional fights.

Dominick combined his two loves, his sport and his hometown, starting a boxing club for young kids at his home parish, Holy Rosary, in an effort to get young kids off the street. Upon his retirement, Dominick couldn’t give up his passion and continued to train young fighters at Bufano’s Gym and the World Boxing and Fitness Gym, training two World Championship Boxers.

In later years, Dominick was recognized for his lifelong boxing career and inducted into the NJ Boxing Hall of Fame. Dominick had a love for his friends and family, always teaching the little ones to play ‘fight’. He will always be remembered for his fighting spirit and love of life. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Theresa (nee Monaco), his son-in-law Larry Zubel and his two grandchildren, Larry and Loriann Zubel, as well as his siblings, Michael, Mary Manzo, Theresa D’Andrea, Anthony, and Sue. He is survived by his dedi-cated and loving daughter, Mary Lou Zubel, and sisters-in-law Annette Amoroso, Catherine Parella, and Eleanor Villani, brothers-in-law Joseph Parella and Anthony Villani as well as the sunshines of his life Saman-tha Rogers, Madyson Weber, and Christian Hughes. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Visitation will be held at A. Scatuorchio & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, February 25, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, February 27 at Holy Rosary Church; Interment to follow at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Barna-bas Medical Center Foundation Loriann Zubel Memorial Fund, 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange, NJ 07052. November 15, 1991:

Dom was a Lightweight out of Jersey City from 1943 to 1948. He fought and beat some of the best in his division including Carmine Fatta,
Al Guido, Joe Peralta, Ruby Garcia and Jackie Leamus just to name a few.

Amoroso proved more dangerous the second time in many bouts. He prides himself on averaging a loss to Marty Pignatore. He also fought
a draw with Pat Scanlon, the first time and returned to Scanlon’s Fort Hamilton, New York “backyard” to score a second round knockout.
Amoroso is said to have had 82 professional bouts in a career curtailed at the age of 28 on advice of eye doctors by the many cuts he
suffered around his eyes.

Former World Champion and currently one of the top boxing trainers in the World, Buddy McGirt, once stated that he learn all he knew
about boxing from Dom Amoroso.
