The young New York fighter was a multiple New York City Golden Gloves champ, and he caught the eye of the boxing elite, including Lou DiBella and Pat Lynch.

The undefeated Vargas had been fighting on DiBella Entertainment cards, including the undercard of Taylor vs. Pavlik I. Most recently, he was fighting on the cards of newly formed Pound for Pound Promotions, which is owned by John Lynch, brother of the aforementioned Pat.

Vargas was 8-0 with 6 KO’s. He was an excellent boxer, and he had power and size. He appeared headed for big things in his division. I had the opportunity of meeting him twice, once at a DiBella Press conference, before he turned pro, and another time, after his bout with Bruce Burkhardt in Atlantic City. Vargas seemed like a delightful young man, and New York City boxing has lost a bright star.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Vargas’ family and friends. Brickcityboxing.com will miss the presence of this fine, young fighter.
