Klitschko Stops Thompson in 11

By: Christopher Roche

Perhaps Tony “The Tiger” Thompson mustered up a little sugar from his frosted flakes, but he did not have enough to wrest the title away from “Dr. Steelhammer” Wladimir Klitschko.

Thompson came out strong, and his long reach gave the Champion some problems early on, and both men suffered cuts over their right eyes in the second round. However, Klitschko started to press the action in the middle rounds. Thompson showed a tough guard, and he was a credit to his hometown, the Nation’s Capitol, as he gave a good effort, but a hard tackle and a Klitschko right hand proved to be too much.

In the tenth round, Klitschko stepped on Thompson’s foot and sent the challenger to the canvas in a rough tackle, and in the eleventh, Thompson went down via a quick right hand. The challenger did not recover. A swollen and cut Klitschko retained his belt via KO.

Klitschko, 32, improved to 51-3, 45 KO’s, and the brave Thompson, 36, dropped to 31-2, 19 KOs. Thompson was stopped for the first time in his career.
