Busy Weekend of Televised Boxing to Kick off 2008

By: Christopher Roche

This Saturday, Showtime will broadcast Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi’s first title defense against Herman Ngoudjo. Malignaggi is the reigning IBF light-welterweight champion. His title defense will be the only televised bout from the card, which takes place at Bally’s in Atlantic City.

Before Saturday night’s title fight, Showtime will whet our appetites and broadcast another edition of their Shobox series on Friday night. Another edition of ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” will also hit the airwaves. In addition, Telefutura makes its 2008 debut on friday with another edition of “Solo Boxeo Tecate”.

Shobox will feature Wahington D.C.’s undefeated Peterson brothers Lamont and Anthony. Telefutura will have junior welterweights Michele Rosales vs. Dairo Esalas and junior bantamweights Brian Viloria vs. Jose Garcia Bernal.

Espn will feature Allan Green against Rubin Williams in a 10 round super-middleweight bout. Hopefully boxing fans all received DVR’s for Christmas, especially with Allan Green going head to head with the Peterson brothers on opposite networks. It is not often that we have that dilemma, but it is a nice one to have.
