Upsets on Telefutura!

Ouma and Diaz both Lose By Decision

By: Christopher Roche

Sometimes workers forget to pack their lunch pales. Tonight, at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, Cabazon, CA, two workmanlike fighters
tasted a touch of famine.

Former IBF Junior Middleweight Champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma was outworked by Saul Roman over the course of ten hard rounds. The referee seemed to let a lot of low-blows go by the boards, and Ouma “dropped” Roman in the eighth on a low shot, but Roman prevailed in a split decision victory. The scores were 95-94, 96-93 for Roman and 95-94 for Ouma. The 27 year-old Roman, of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico improved to 28-4, 24 KO’s, while Ouma, of Uganda, dropped to 25-4-1, 15 KO’s.

In another upset, Jose “Pitbull” Diaz, of Houston, TX, dropped a unanimous decision to Miguel Angel Munguia. Diaz, 21, is the younger brother of Lightweight Champ Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz. Manguia outworked Diaz over 10 hard rounds and took the decision by a count of 92-97, 94-95 and 93-96. Diaz drops to 14-1, 4 KO’s, and Munguia improved to 16-9-1, 13 KO’s.

Overall, the ballroom looked fairly empty, but Solo Boxeo Tecate on Telefutura did a nice job calling the action. Although I do not speak Spanish fluently, I enjoy their broadcasts and the matchups.

Antonio Margarito was ringside for this bout, and he gave a very eloquent interview. Margarito is leading up to his fight with Golden Johnson, which will be on the Cotto vs. Mosley undercard in Madison Square Garden.
