Alvarez Outpoints Sanders-Urango Knocks out Athumani

By: Christopher Roche

Shamon Alvarez won a twelve round unanimous decison on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The most exciting fight took place in the co-feature.

In the aforementioned co-feature, Juan Urango came to Atlantic City, NJ to prove that he is for real. He almost proved that dreams can come true for Nasser Athumani.

Urango, 26, came out strong in the first with a knockdown of his Kenyan foe, but Athumani, 38, rose from the canvas and scored several hard shots. The Colombian Urango, who last fought in January in a lopsided loss to Ricky Hatton, almost ate the canvas himself in the first round, but he made it through upright.

The next two rounds saw both southpaws box effectively, but Athumani outworked Urango. Finally, in the fourth, Urango landed a combination that planted Athumani, who rose at the count of nine. Athumani, who had been knocked out in all four of his losses, did not look eager to take any more shots, and referee Sparkle Lee waived off the bout at 2:59 of the fourth.

Urango improved to 18-1-1, 14 KO’s while Athumani dropped to 20-5-1, 16 KO’s.
