Stevie Johnston captures IBA lightweight title in Orlando

LAS VEGAS (January 27, 2007) – Former two-time WBC lightweight champion Stevie “Lil’ But Bad” Johnston captured the vacant IBA title last night (Friday, Jan. 26) on the “Blood, Sweat & Guts” card, presented by Silverhawk Championship Boxing, at Destiny Nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

The crafty Johnston (40-4-1, 18 KOs) won a 12-round majority decision (18-3, 13 KOs) against Tyrone “Fury” Harris (18-3, 13 KOs).

Former NABF super featherweight champion Fernando “El Pillo” Trejo (28-12-4, 17 KOs) schooled Sean “Pit Bull” Plessis (17-4, 4 KOs) for 12-rounds to win a unanimous decision (119-108, 116-111, 116-111) and the vacant IBO Intercontinental super featherweight crown.

Texas State champion Hector “Hurricane” Ferreyro (13-5-1, 10 KOs) upset previously unbeaten USBO title-holder Leo “Paco” Nolan (26-1, 10 KOs) for his belt by 12-round majority decision (118-110, 115-112, 114-114).

In another upset, Marlon “Rumblin’ Man” Hayes (23-5, 11 KOs) defeated former IBF light heavyweight champion William “KO King” Guthrie (35-4-2, 28 KOs) for the vacant NBA cruiserweight championship by unanimous 12-round decision (119-109 three times).

Cruiserweight prospect Alfredo Escalera (13-0, 10 KOs), son of the great Puerto Rican world champion Alfredo Escalera, remained unbeaten with a six-round unanimous decision (60-54 three times) versus Darryl Holley (5-3, 1 KO).
