IS CALZAGHE SET TO CLEAN UP THE SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION?

An interesting bout is scheduled to take place October 14th in Copenhagen, Denmark. It has kind of slipped through the press radar but it is really a significant bout.

Highly touted Mikkel Kessler will take on long time title holder Markus Beyer to unify the WBA and WBC super middleweight titles. This is a great test for Kessler and also a chance for Beyer to gain some long overdue respect. The fact that Joe Calzaghe wiil defend his WBO super middleweight title on the same night in Manchester, England against Sakio Bika to unify the WBO and IBF titles is significant. It appears obvious that the winners of these October 14th card will meet to unify the title.

The projected favorites will be Calzaghe and Kessler and if they pull off the wins, a match between them would be huge. I think the US is now sold on Calzaghe after his one sided victory over Jeff Lacy. Wins over Bika and Kessler would establish Calzaghe as a real commodity here in the US.

It would be great to see Calzaghe have a mega fight here in the US in 2007. We’ll have to see how this scenario plays out. Joe deserves a shot at the elite at 168 and 175.
