WBA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION JUAN DIAZ TO RECEIVE PROCLAMATION FROM CITY OF HOUSTON ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 15

HOUSTON, TX (August 11, 2006) – Houston Mayor Bill White has declared Tuesday, August 15, 2006, as Juan Diaz Day in the city of Houston, TX, it was announced today by MAIN EVENTS CEO Kathy Duva. The undefeated WBA Lightweight Champion who hails from Houston will receive a proclamation from the mayor at the following location:

City Hall Council Chambers

On August 15, 2006, Juan Diaz will be recognized during the Public Session of the Houston City Council for his dedication and service to the community, and his outstanding contributions to the world of boxing. The City of Houston salutes and commends Juan Diaz on this important occasion, and extends best wishes for a successful and rewarding year.

Therefore, I, Bill White, Mayor of the City of Houston, do hereby proclaim August 15, 2006, as Juan Diaz Day in Houston, Texas.

Diaz (30-0, 15 KO’s) has successfully defended his crown four times. The 22-year-old Houston, TX native captured the WBA lightweight crown on July 17, 2004, when he dominated defending champion Lakva Sim to earn a unanimous decision victory (W 12). In his last bout on July 15, 2006, Diaz battered Randy Suico to earn a ninth round stoppage (TKO 9). Diaz is entering his senior year at the University of Houston Downtown where he majors in political science.
