“PUSH”
by
RICKY RAY TAYLOR
~~~~Boxing Trainers worldwide are in business today …
by the mere fact
that their clients cannot
– or simply will not –
“push themselves”.
Granted, by the time the fighter earns the moniker “professional”,
all bets are off
and the demons keeping them on the couch after work
must be conquered
in order to keep the lights on.
That’s a given.
The blunt reality, however, is that there are far too many professional-boxers
having oathed to embrace this lifetime
of mental preparedness,
hard-work
& determination –
who simply fail in all efforts to make it real.
For the most part though,
this article is aimed at the other two levels of fighters;
amateur & white-collars.
These 3 essential qualities;
PREPERATION,
HARD-WORK,
DETERMINATION
must not only exist within these fighters,
rather,
these attitudes should define every aspect of their personalities.
The amateur boxer not only wakes up in the morning for a run,
but actually sprints so hard,
and so fast,
for so long
that the pathway to unconsciousness
is only steps away,
daily – each time they run.
Being mindful of their weight,
the amateur fighter doesn’t shoulder themselves
with an outside world who simply doesn’t get them.
Thus, the large majority of their close friends are fellow fighters.
Their bedtimes are different,
recreational activities,
interests,
hobbies and conversations
all stand apart from the ones who don’t know what it’s like
to be tired in front of someone
who is trying to knock them out.
Although similar in regards to WINNING
and evolving around the squared circle,
the white-collar soldier is faced with their own war.
Of course, this is nothing new for the white-collar warrior
to wake each morning before the sun,
slave 10-hours in a building
only to cap it off
with another grueling hour in the gym.
BOXING is the only thing “new” to these machines, the “routine” is not.
They have been at this high-octane level since 1st grade.
It is what engined them through a 4.0 GPA in high-school
while juggling a part time job
and participating in sports.
It is the force that powered them through law-school,
the valor which shot them to the top of their professions
and the potency which keeps them breathing.
It is the self-inflicted requirement
that’s needed in their lives
to keep the machine churning.
Each level fighter strives daily to be a Champion.
Some stride much easier than others yet,
the same path to victory rests in them all:
DOING SOMETHING THEY DON’T WANT TO DO –
IN ORDER TO CREATE DISTANCE
FROM THE ONES WHO SIMPLY WON’T
“PUSH”.
