Thursday night over ESPN Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing brought in Australia’s Jason Moloney stopped Mexico’s Leonardo “Leon” Baez continuing to look for a title rematch at the MGM Grand Bubble in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the Main Event bantamweight Jason Moloney, 21-1 (17), #117 ¾, of Melbourne, Australia, stopped Leonardo “Leon” Baez, 18-3 (9), #118 ¼, of Mexicali, MEX, at the end of seven in a scheduled 10 rounds.

In the first round both started throwing punches. Moloney seemed to pull out the round. In the second round Moloney was much more accurate than the wild swinging Baez. Both fighters were going to the body with Moloney taking the round. In the third round Moloney stayed inside beating the taller Baez to the punch on the body. Good round for both. Baez suffered a small cut on left eyebrow.

In the fourth round it was close with Baez coming back well. In the fifth round Moloney pinned Baez in a corner in the first half of the fight. A right uppercut from Moloney to the body hurt Baez. All of the fighting was on the inside. In the sixth round Moloney worked the body of Baez.

In the seventh round the cut of Baez was coming down the side of his left cheek. Baez couldn’t come out for the eighth round.

“I felt good tonight. I wanted this fight bad and want another title fight. Nothing was going to stop me tonight,” said Moloney.

In the co-feature lightweight Abraham “El Super” Nova, 19-0 (14), #131 ¾, of PR, out of Albany, NY, won a close decision over Avery Sparrow, 10-2 (3), #131 1/2, of Philadelphia, PA, 10 rounds.

In the first round late sub (a 3 week notice, coming off a 15 month of inactivity) Avery landed a lead right on the chin of Abraham to start the fight. It took Nova half a round to land his best punch a left to the body of Sparrow. Sparrow landed the final punch a right on the chin. In the second round Sparrow continued to outwork Nova. In the third round Sparrow continued using his jab as Nova was loading up throwing little than one left hook to the chin.

In the fourth round Nova finally opened up at the start of the round. He also finished stronger. In the fifth round Sparrow came back to again outwork Nova who did too much posing. In the sixth round Nova seemed to wake up momentarily but in the final minute Sparrow landed an overhand right to the head of Nova.

In the seventh round Sparrow continued using his jab to keep Nova at bay. In the eighth round Nova finally landed a big punch a right on the chin of Sparrow. Nova started working the body of Sparrow. Good round for Nova. In the ninth round Nova behind is looking to get a knockout landing a good right on the chin of Sparrow. Both fighters exchanged right hands to the head.

In the tenth and final round it was close with Sparrow ending strong despite the short notice and lay-off. Drakulich was the ref.

Scores were a strange 99-91 DeLuca, 97-93 Giampi and 96-94 Jarman for Nova with this writer 96-94 Sparrow.

Featherweight southpaw Orlando “El Zurdo” Gonzalez, 15-0 (10), #126, of Aguadilla, PR, scored a pair of knockdowns defeating Luis Porozo, 15-3 (8), #125, of Santo Domingo, Ecuador, over 8 rounds.

In the first round Gonzalez had a slight edge out landing Porozo. In the second round Porozo missed a right and got countered by a left on the chin by Gonzalez dropping Porozo in the final seconds of the round for an 8-count by referee Robert Hoyle.

In the third round Porozo came out swinging from a crouch with arms to his side against the upright Gonzalez. He used a good body work taking the round. In the fourth round it was close and could have gone either way though Porozo the busier. In the fifth round Gonzalez landed a low left blow with referee Hoyle giving Porozo a couple of minutes to recoup. Porozo came back landing a good right on the chin of Gonzalez. Porozo rocked Gonzalez with a combination to the chin. Gonzalez not living up to the hype he’s gotten. In the sixth round Porozo did too much running with the fight up for grabs.

In the seventh round Gonzalez landed a low punch for the third time though the second one was reversed by replay. In the final seconds of the round Gonzalez landed a right hook to the head for an 8-count just before the bell. In the eighth and final round both went through the motions as if they already won.

Scores were 76-74 and 77-73 twice with this writer 77-74.

In a rematch heavyweight Waldo Cortes Acosta, 5-3 (2), #246, of AZ, was stopped by Kingsley Ibeh, 4-1 (3), #286 ¼, of Nigeria, out of Phoenix, AZ, at 1:41 of the fourth in a scheduled 6 rounds.

In the first two rounds they fought on even terms in this rematch. In the fourth round Ibeh switches back and forth from orthodox to southpaw. Ibeh landed a pair of rights and a glancing left all to the head of Acosta avenging his previous loss to Acosta. He beat the count from referee Vic Drakulich but walked away getting waved off.

Welterweight “Super Bad” Vlad Panin, 8-1 (4), #149, of Belarus, and L.A., CA, won a majority decision over Benjamin Whittaker, 13-4 (3), #149, of San Antonio, TX, over 6 rounds.

In the first round the taller Panin controlled with his boxing. Both landed left hooks to the chin at the same time in the final minute. In the third round Panin continued to outwork Whittaker until the final minute when Whittaker landed his best punch a lead right on the chin

In the fifth round it was a close one with neither dominating. In the sixth and final round Whittaker started out with a solid left hook to the chin of Panin. Whittaker had a good round being more aggressive but seemed like too little too late. Kenny Bayliss was the ref.

Scores were DeLuca 57-57, Jarman and Giampi 58-56 as did this writer.

Welterweight Reymond Yanong, 11-5-1 (9), #143, of Paranaque City, PH, defeated Clay “Third Degree” Burns, 9-8-2 (4), #143 1/2, of Ft. Worth, TX, over 6 rounds.

In the first round it was wild swinging mostly with rights with few landing. The action picked up in the final thirty seconds with both getting their licks in. In the second round Burns switched to southpaw landing a lead left to the chin of Yanong. The wild swinging continued. In the third round at the halfway point both were landing with head shots. In the final minute of the round Burns drove Yanong into the ropes. In the final ten seconds Yanong rocked Burns with a right followed by a left on the chin.

In the fourth round after a minute gone Burns landed a good left to the chin that Yanong countered with a right on the chin of his own. In the middle of the ring in the final minute Yanong got in an overhand right to the chin of Burns. In the fifth round Yanong continued to be the aggressor. In the final seconds of the round Yanong landed a 3-punch combination to the head of Burns. Just prior to the bell Burns hurt Yanong with a good body shot but got one in return. In the sixth and final round Burns seemed out of gas. Yanong worked the body of Burns in the final part of the round. Robert Houle was the ref.

Scores were 58-56 Burns and 59-55 and 58-56 Yanong.
