On November 5th 1984 former world heavyweight champion George Foreman stopped Michael Moorer for his IBF title. In his previous fight he lost to Tommy Morrison for the vacant WBO title so why did “Big” George even qualify for a title fight with Moorer?

Moorer it seemed to this writer always seemed uncomfortable holding that title. He looked like he didn’t want to be there in the ring at the end losing to Foreman though well head in the fight at 88-83 twice and 86-85 on the scorecards going into the tenth round. Remember his trainer Teddy Atlas using a telephone in the corner to encourage him in one of his fights?

Foreman was stripped of the IBF title for refusing to fight Tony Tucker. He won a questionable majority decision over Germany’s Axel Schulz for something called the World Boxing Union’s vacant title and got stripped due to not giving Schulz a rematch. Foreman should have quit after the Moorer fight but money made him go forward.

Now there is talk starting with 53 year-old “Iron” Mike Tyson and 57 year-old Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield talking about fighting again. In 2015 a 51 year-old Donovan “Razor” Ruddock came back posting two wins after a 14 year lay-off before getting knocked out in his third comeback fight.

Tyson and Holyfield and other over 50 heavyweights may either need the money of the limelight but for any commission to approve of either one getting a license should be questioned. An exhibition at best would be the most anyone over 50 should have.
