The race to finish the year as the pound-for-pound number one in boxing is on. Many boxers will feel they have a great chance of cementing their place at the top of that list at the end of 2020.
Here is a look at three men who are in a great position to seal that spot.
Vasyl Lomachenko
Vasyl Lomachenko is the reigning pound-for-pound number one in boxing in many recognised lists, including the Boxing Writers Association of America. The Ukranian has only had 15 professional fights, but since turning a pro, the Olympic gold medallist has been so dominant in the ring.
Lomachenko added the WBC crown to his WBA and WBO titles last August when he defeated Luke Campbell in the lightweight division.
Lomachenko could get the chance to become the undisputed lightweight champion in 2020 with a bout against the IBF champion Teofimo Lopez. If he is successful against the only other major title-holder in his division, that would help him reaffirm his title of being the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet right now.
Tyson Fury
Tyson Fury produced one of the best performances of the century in the heavyweight division when he defeated Deontay Wilder to win the WBC title back in February.
The British boxer dominated Wilder in their rematch to become a world champion for the second time in his career. His slick skills inside the ring were there for us all to see in a display which made the boxing world take note.
Fury is now odds-on at 1/2 in the betting to beat Anthony Joshua. If that fight can be made in 2020, it will produce the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennon Lewis in 2000.
An all-British clash between the heavyweights would be a huge contest which could take place at Wembley Stadium. Joshua is arguably the last man in his division which could stop him from becoming the pound-for-pound number one in the sport.
Terence Crawford
Terence Crawford has been part of the top 10 pound-for-pound list for a number of years now. The WBO welterweight champion is 36-0 since turning a professional. Bud has held world titles in three weight divisions, including all four major belts in the light welterweight category between 2015 and 2017.
Over the last 12 months, Crawford has had excellent wins over Amir Khan and Egidijus Kavaliauskas. He stopped Khan in the sixth round of their contest, while Kavaliauskas lasted three rounds longer back in December.
Crawford has been linked with a unification contest against Errol Spence Jr later this year. The WBC and IBF champion was involved in a car accident in 2019 but it has been reported that he is now back in training.
A bout between the two welterweight champions would determine who the number one boxer in the welterweight division is right now. The winner could also stake a strong claim for the position as the top pound-for-pound boxer, in particular Crawford who is already ranked highly on that list.
With so much boxing left in 2020, it is going to be a fascinating year to see who can seal the number one spot in the coveted ranking in the sport.
