Newark, NJ –- December 6, 2019 — Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the City of Newark will honor 19-year-old Newark native and Featherweight Boxing World Champion Shakur Stevenson on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 6 p.m., at Newark Symphony Hall, located at 1020 Broad Street. Mr. Stevenson is being honored for winning the World Boxing Organization title in a 12-round bout with Joet Gonzalez in Las Vegas on October 26, by unanimous decision. He has a 13-0 record as a professional boxer.

A native of Newark, Mr. Stevenson is the oldest of nine siblings. He took up boxing at age five under his grandfather Wali Moses. He won the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championships, 2014 Youth Olympic Games, and the 2015 Senior US Olympic Trials. He was the only US male boxer to gain a medal in the Olympics, losing in the Gold Medal Match to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez on points.
