After a vote of 15-14 with writers Dave Ruff and Ken Hissner voting on the President of VBA Ring One, the oldest in the country founded in 1958, that the President can only serve two consecutive terms.
Past President Charley Sgrillo who had exceeded his two terms was replaced by incoming President Frank Kubach. Kubach known for his generosity toward the club at their November meeting said he would pay the bill for the upcoming Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder and Cuban Louis Ortiz in their rematch for Wilder’s WBC World Heavyweight title November 23rd, just one of the many donations of his.
There are half a dozen murals on the outside of the Ring’s building of past boxing greats at Clearfield and Richmond Streets in the Port Richmond section of Philly. Kubach was inducted into the PAB HOF recently and is the owner and operator of one of the oldest gyms in Philly for 30+ years “The Front Street Gym!” Kubach was voted the 2019 VBA Ring 1 Man of the Year as a Philanthropist Charity work to the VBA & the Boxing Community.
The new Vice President is Joe Mathis, Sr. As an amateur boxer he trained under the Joe Frazier Gym under the tutelage of IBHOF trainer Philly’s George Benton. Mathis was a member 17 year member of the Local 30 Roofers Union and a board member of the Iron Worker’s Union. He served as a sparring partner for four well-known Philly boxers in “Bad” Bennie Briscoe, Eugene “Cyclone” Hart, Willie “The Worm” Monroe and Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts.
Dr. George Bonner who will serve as Recording Secretary has been a ringside physician with USA Mid-Atlantic Boxing for the last 20+ years and serves The Board of Governors with USA Boxing for the last 8 years. In 2015 he was inducted into the PA Golden Glove Hall of Fame and is also an inductee into the PAB HOF. Currently ordained Buddhist Mont, he leads the Tri State Sangha: PA, NJ & NY teaching Zen meditation on a weekly basis. His current mission is to help raise funds for local boxers to compete & participate in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Jimmy Moran will serve as Sargent at Arms. He is currently Executive Board Member of ACTWU, IUE, USWA, Teamsters UAW, IBT, TNG and CWA. Chair appointments included The Labor Day Parade & May Day Committee. He is a board of the PA Labor Society & National Coalition on Occupational Safety & Health – Director of Emeritus of Philaposh, and Co-host on 106.5 WPPM, Monday 5PM-6PM.
