I agree with a lot of what was said in this Porter-Garcia fight preview, except 2 things… the result… Shawn Porter wins the fight, and saying the Broner knock down meant anything vs. Porter….no way…..Shawn kicked his ass every minute of every round and looking to finish him off suffered a flash knock down….meaningless. Shawn will do what he does and he will make Garcia uncomfortable and he will attempt to keep him uncomfortable all night.
Shawn has 3 (so-called) blemishes on his record, 2 losses (Thurman, Brook) and a draw (Diaz). All three were close fights that were hard fought and could have went either way. On the other hand, Danny has only 1 loss, to Keith Thurman, a split decision…that probably should have been unanimous, and would have been if Keith Thurman didn’t start trying to play it safe more and more as the night went on. Both are very steady, consistent, confident fighters. The judges have definitely favored Garcia in close fights (Peterson, Herrera) while Porter as I said has been stiffed in close fight or at least not given anything close.
Garcia has probably been better at making adjustments on the fly, during fights and coming on late strategically to win fights. I have always loved how Shawn Porter fights, while, like many people I have felt Garcia got lucky a few times earlier in his career… but over the years even a hater must admit he knows how to win and that’s an important intangible.
Back to where I started….I love watching Shawn Porter fight, he fights harder than anyone in boxing right now, consistently and he makes me smile during fights because when he is bum rushing and bringing the pain and doing all he can to make a war he looks like he enjoys it…I know I do!
I don’t see any quit in Danny, he has a granite chin and he may be considered the smarter or more technical fighter, people may say more talented in some ways. They can also say he is more versatile with that X factor where he always knows how to win…I don’t think Danny can make Shawn be forced to fight his fight as much as I believe Shawn can make Danny fight his fight. ….Considering their pasts, histories, the rivalry, timing, their dads in their corners and the fact that ultimately these guys match up close enough to really make who wins come down to 1 factor. Who wants it more?
I can’t say Danny doesn’t, but at this moment in his career I can’t see Shawn being out fought. Can Danny pull another rabbit out of his hat? Yes, if he figures ways to keep Porter off of him and fighting Danny’s fight for extended periods of time, everything can change…..but I think Porter takes a close decision here in a fight that screams rematch.
