Mickey Rosati, Sr. was a fine amateur champion who didn’t want to turn professional. His father was talked into it by trainer Carmen Graziano. Rosati went 11-1 and in finally losing got his wish to stop as a professional.
Rosati, Sr. has trained many a young fighter and at one time had three of the best named Mickey, Jr., Billy Uhl and Jerry Owens. Seeing three outstanding “white kids” was quite unusual with so much talent. Only Owens would eventually turn professional. Uhl was a plumber and Owens an electrician. They had trades and didn’t need to turn professional.
Mickey, Jr. got to the finals and was faced to meet favorite Hugh “Buttons” Kearney and pulled out the win in a spectacular performance to win the PA Golden Gloves title in 1981 at #132. The previous year he won the 1980 AAU and Region in New York and New Jersey.
Mickey, Jr. assisted his father in their Rosati Auto Business at 1937 South Chadwick Street in South Philadelphia with the gym then and still now over the shop. Mickey, Sr. never tried to talk his son into turning professional like his father got his wish. Mickey Jr is currently training one of the top prospects in the country who was a former 2015 National Golden Gloves champion and a Bronze winner in 2016 named Christian Carto. He is a bantamweight with his 12-0 record with eleven knockouts which streak was stopped in his last fight. He is a fighter of “few words” who lets his performance to his talking.
At one of the recent fights Carto had during the referee’s instructions prior to the fight in the ring the opponent’s trainer said “now you are in with a man, not those boys you have been fighting.” Within minutes Carto had his opponent stretched and walked over to his corner pointing to his trainer and saying “how’s your boy look now?”
Carto will be fighting December 1st at the Sugar House Casino in Philadelphia. His manager Jimmy Binns, Jr. passed away not too long ago. He is currently without a manager and promoter with all his fights being for Hard Hitting Promotions who is doing the Casino show and King’s Promotions who are running the same night.
Mickey, Jr. is just as humble and quiet as his fighter Carto and you have to like both if you are fortunate enough to meet them in and out of the ring! Carto’s father Frank and Frank, Jr. his brother are always there supporting Christian and have a lot to do with the final decisions.
