At the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida, Matchroom Boxing – Eddie Hearn – Saul Alvarez, over DAZN presented WBC & WBA Super World Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez stopped Avni Yildirim after 3 rounds.
In the Main Event WBC & WBA Super World Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 55-1-2 (37), #167.6, of Guadalajara, MEX, stopped Avni “Mr Robot” Yildirim, 21-3 (12), #167.6, of Istanbul, Turkey, after the third round of a scheduled 12 rounds.
In the first round Alvarez landed many body shots on Yildirim. In the third round a right from Alvarez on the chin dropped Yildirim for an 8-count. Referee was Telis Assimenios.
“It’s great to be active and to get the knockout. I came in here to win and have the best trainer in the world. I feel strong, I feel fast. I want to unify the 168,” said Alvarez. Per his promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing that Alvarez will unify with WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders next.
McWilliams Arroyo, 21-4 (16), #111.8, of Fajardo, PR, stopped Abraham “Choko” Rodriguez, 27-3 (13), #112, of Tijuana, Baja CA, at 1:41 of the fifth of a scheduled 12 rounds for the interim WBC flyweight title.
In the fourth round a right hand body shot from Arroyo and down went Rodriguez for an 8-count. In the fifth round Arroyo hurt Rodriguez with a right to the body when the latter’s corner called a halt.
Heavyweight 2-time Olympian southpaw Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang, 22-0-1 (17), #256 1/4, of China and Las Vegas, NV, ended in a majority draw with southpaw Jerry Forrest, 26-4-1 (20), #236 of Newport News VA, over 10 rounds, with Forrest down 3 times.
In the first round both threw left’s with Zhang’s getting there first on the chin and down went Forrest for an 8 count just prior to the bell. In the second round Forrest rocked Zhang who came back with a right hook on the head and down. In the third Zhang once again had Forrest down with a left to the head for an eight count. In the seventh round Zhang was cut over the right eye due to a clash of heads. In the ninth round referee Frank Gentile took away a point from Zhang for continuous leaning onto the back of Forrest. Both fighters were exhausted especially Zhang. In the tenth and final round Zhang barely got through the round.
Scores were 95-93 Forrest and 93-93 as did this writer.
Super Middleweight Diego Pacheco, 11-0 (8), #168, of South Central L.A., CA, defeated Rodolfo “Cobrita” Gomez, Jr., 14-5-1 (10), #167, of MEX and Laredo, CA, 8 rounds.
In the first round Pacheco set the pace and at 6:04 had the reach in a good competitive fight the rest of the way.
Scores were all 79-73.
Super Middle Alexis Espino, 7-0 (5), #167 ¾”, of Las Vegas, NV, stopped Ashton Sykes, 5-4 (1), #164 ¼, of Columbia, MD, at 2:03 of the fifth of a 6.
Super Featherweight Marc Castro, 2-0 (2), of Fresno, CA, stopped John Morago, of Phoenix, AZ, at 2:29 of the second round of a 4.
In the first round a jab from Castro knocked Morago down. In the second round Castro dropped Morago with a left to the chin and a right to the chin for two knockdowns ending the fight.
