At the Alamodome, in San Antonio, TX, Saturday, on DAZN, Canelo Boxing – Saul Alvarez and Matchroom Boxing – Eddie Hearn presented WBA Super World Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez winning over WBA World Super Middleweight champ Callum “Mundo” Smith for the vacant WBC World Super World Super Middleweight title and WBA titles.
In the Main Event WBA Super World Middle champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 54-1-2 (36), #168, of Guadalajara, MEX, defeated WBA World Super Middleweight champ Callum “Mundo” Smith, 27-1 (19), #168, of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK, over 12 rounds.
In the first round Smith landed more jabs and at end of round Alvarez started toward wrong corner. In the second through the fifth rounds what little landing was from Alvarez. In the sixth through the eighth the taller Smith jabbed his way with Alvarez landing little. In the ninth Alvarez had a big round. In the tenth round Alvarez had Smith’s nose bleeding. In the eleventh and twelfth rounds Alvarez got the best of it.
Scores were 119-109 twice and 117-111 with this writer 115-113.
Heavyweight Frank “The Cuban Flash” Sanchez, 17-0 (13), #229, of Cuba and Las Vegas, NV, knocked out Julian “Pit Bull Jr” Fernandez, 14-3 (11), #209, of Tijuana, MEX, at 1:14 of the seventh round of a scheduled 10 rounds.
In the seventh round a straight right from Sanchez on the chin put Fernandez through the ropes. Less said the better in this one.
Welterweight Christian “Ninote” Alan Gomez Duran, 19-2-1 (17), of Guadalajara, MEX, knocked out Angel “Hit Man” Hernandez, 17-16-2 (11), of McAllen, TX, at 1:54 of the third of an 8.
Middleweight southpaw Austin “Ammo” Williams, 7-0 (6), #159 ¼, of Houston, TX, stopped Isiah “Swift Hands” Jones, 9-4 (3), #157, of Detroit, MI, at 1:29 of the first round of a 6.
In the first round a lead left from southpaw Williams had Jones Hurt and almost off his feet. Williams pinned Jones against the ropes and never stopped punching until referee Mark Calo-oy wisely halted it.
Featherweight southpaw Raymond “Savage” Ford, 8-0 (4), #128 ½, of Camden, NJ, stopped southpaw Juan Antonio “El Lobo” Lopez, 15-8 (6), #129 ¼, of MEX, and Dallas, TX, at 1:14 of the seventh of an 8.
In the final seconds of the first round Ford landed a double right hook to the chin dropping Lopez for an 8-count. From the third through the fifth Lopez shut down Ford. In the sixth it was all Ford. In the seventh a right hook from Ford on the chin of Lopez dropped him to a knee. He watched referee Jon Schloree count to ten and it was all over.
Super Feather Marc Castro, 1-0 (1), #130 ½, of Fresno, CA, stopped Luis “El Galan Javi” Valdez, 7-6-1 (2), #128 ¾, of Tijuana, MEX, at 1:59 of the third of a scheduled 4 rounds.
In the second round a right from Castro on the chin of Valdez and down he went for 8-count. In the third a 3-punch combination from Castro to the head and body and Valdez took the count on a knee from referee Marc Calo-oy.
Featherweight Alexis “Picudito” Eduardo Molina, 8-0-1 (5), majority draw with Robbie Greenwood, 5-0-1 (2), of Frankford, IND, over 4 rounds.
