At the Gimnasio TV Azteca, in Distrito Federal, Mexico City, MEX, Saturday, Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing continued a busy schedule with this one south of the border. WBO Super Bantam champ Emanuel Navarrete in a non-title bout main event stopped Uriel Lopez in 6.
In a non-title Main Event WBO Super Bantamweight champion Emanuel
“Vaquero” Navarrete, 32-1 (28), #127, of San Juan Zitlaltapec, Distrito Federal, MEX, stopped Uriel “Yuca” Lopez, 13-14-1 (6), of Distrito Federal, Mexico City, MEX, at 2:22 in the sixth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.
In the first round Lopez pressed the slow starting Navarrate the entire round. In the second round Lopez came out throwing punches until Navarrate found his rhythm switching from orthodox to southpaw. In the third round Lopez kept coming forward but getting countered well by Navarrate.
In the fourth round the action picked up with both fighters having their moments. In the fifth round Navarrate landed a 3-punch combination with the final right on the chin rocked the game Lopez. Seconds later Navaratte dropped Lopez with a body shot for an 8-count. A pair of rights from Navarrate to the chin of Lopez rocked him.
In the sixth round Navarrate continued landing left hooks to the body of Lopez hurting him. He kept up landing punch after punch to the body and head of Lopez finally scoring his second knockdown with a flurry of punches. As Lopez got up the referee wisely stopped it.
In the co-feature Featherweight southpaw Carlos “Chinito” Ornelas, 25-3 (14), #127, of Mulege, Baja California Sur, MEX, was upset by stoppage by Edwin “Pupo” Palomares, 13-3-1 (4), #127, of Distrito Federal, Mexico City, MEX, of the fifth round scheduled for 10 rounds.
In the first two rounds Palomares continued pressing the action with Ornelas countering well. In the third round Palomares scoring well in the first half of the round with Ornelas coming back well in the second half of the round.
In the fourth round Palomares kept outworking Ornelas. In the fifth round Palomares kept the pressure on Ornelas dropping him with a right on the side. Ornelas started to get up and dropped back to a knee. His corner waved it off. Ring announcer speaking in Spanish and the commentators not announcing the time of the stoppage.
Featherweight Sergio Sanchez, 15-1 (9), #126, of Santa Lucia del Camino, Oaxaca, MEX, knocked out Gustavo Alan Pina, 8-3 (5), #126, of Distrito Federal, Mexico City, MEX, at 0:06 in round 3 in a scheduled 8 rounds.
In the first round Sanchez dominated scoring a knockdown with a left hook to the chin of Pina. In the third round a left uppercut from Sanchez on the chin of Pina and down and out he went.
In the opening bout Flyweight Ivan Armando Garcia, 6-0 (3), #113, of Distrito Federal, Mexco City, MEX, defeated Roberto “El Duro” Palamares, 5-4-1 (1), #113, of Distrito Federal, Mexico City, MEX, over 6 lopsided rounds.
In the second and third rounds wild swinging Garcia got the best of it after limited action. In the fourth round Garcia due to an accidental clash of hears received a cut above his left eye.
In the sixth and last round showing no jab but wild right hands Garcia continued winning every round with the defensive minded Palamares making little effort.
Scores were 60-54 by this writer with the Spanish scores not being interpreted by the US commentator.
Waiting for ESPN to come on with this event was laughable watching UFC! Are you kidding me? Boxing didn’t start until 11:15pm est.
