Promoter Julio Alvarez and matchmaker Mike Melendez brought in 3 professional bouts and 4 amateur bouts before a well-attended event at the Eagle Club in Lebanon, PA, Saturday.
In the Main Event southpaw Nicolas Hernandez, 10-4-2 (2), #154.4, of Lebanon, PA, and Rance Ward, 4-0-1 (2), #153 1/2, of Houma, TX, drew over 6 rounds.
In the first round Hernandez did well with Ward finishing the second half of the round well with good hand speed. In the second round Ward had too much hand speed for Hernandez whose nose was red. In the third round Hernandez got back into it outworking Ward mostly on the inside.
In the fourth round it was give and take with Ward gaining the edge but Hernandez hurt Ward at the bell. In the fifth round it was another close one with Hernandez gaining an edge with inside work using uppercuts. In the sixth and final round the more experience of Hernandez paid off. He had the crowd behind him the entire fight. Referee was Gary Rosato.
Scores were Bernard Bruni 59-55 Ward, John Gradowski and Adam Frisca 57-57. This writer had it 58-56 Hernandez.
Lightweight Kenya Rainey, 0-1 (0) of Forest Park, IL, lost to southpaw Corey Lopez, 1-0 (0), of Altoona, PA, over 4 rounds.
In the first round Rainey countered well especially in the final minute of the round. In the second round Rainey went to go inside and walked into a Lopez lead left on the and down he went for an 8-count from referee Gary Rosato. Rainey fought back well the rest of the round.
In the third round Lopez used a good right uppercut and in the halfway mark landed a right hook to the chin of Rainey rocking him. In the fourth and final round Lopez used his reach but Rainey never stopped coming forward.
Scores were Bruni 40-35, Friscia and Gradowski 39-36 as did this writer.
Super Welterweight James “Thunder” Robinson, 6-13-5 (5) #148, of York, PA, stopped southpaw Louis “Yeye” Rodriguez, 3-10 (2), #148, of PR out of Lebanon, PA, at 1:40 of the third round over 4 rounds.
In the first round it was all Robinson using effective uppercuts inside as southpaw Rodriguez was on the defense for the most part. In the second round Robinson had Rodriguez on the ropes for the most part. Rodriguez hit the canvas due to a beltline uppercut and got a 5 minute rest from referee Rosato.
In the third round Robinson had Rodriguez in trouble from the start having him in the corner of Rodriguez until his corner waved off the fight.
There were four amateur bouts prior to the professional bouts. All were won by the NBC Club out of Lebanon.
