The big one event of the three shown on Saturday would be DAZN at 9pm between WBO Light Heavyweight champion Russian Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 34-3-1 (29), out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, defending his title against WBA Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 52-1-2 (35), of Guadalajara, MEX, over 12 rounds.
Being it is being held at the Grand Garden Arena, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, gives an edge to Alvarez whenever he fights in NV. Alvarez stepped up in weight in December 18, 2018 stopping then WBA World Super Middleweight champion Rocky Fielding, 27-1, for his title. Having no interest in defending the title Alvarez returned to Middleweight. The same will happen if he wins at light heavyweight.
At the Dignity Health Sports Bar, Carson, CA, WBC World Super Featherweight champion Miguel “El Alacran” Berchelt, 36-1 (32), defends his title against the former WBA Super Featherweight champion Jason “El Canito” Sosa, 23-3-4 (16), of Camden, NJ, over 12 rounds. Berchelt’s only loss was in 2014. He’s won his last fifteen fights by stoppage since.
It is nothing new for Sosa to be the underdog going into this fight. He held WBA Super World Featherweight champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters to a draw in December of 2015. Then in his following fight stopped the new WBA Featherweight champion Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna, 29-0-1, for the title in Beijing, China. Then defeated UK’s Stephen Smith, 24-2, in Monte Carlo. He gave up his title in order to fight WBO World champion Vasiliy “High-Tech” Lomachenko, 7-1, losing in April of 2017. In his next fight he lost to former interim WBA Lightweight champion Yoriorkis Gamboa, 27-2. He has since bounced back with three wins.
FS1 from MGM National Harbor, Oxen Hill, MD, has former world champion Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna, 34-2-1 (23), of DR out of Braintree, MASS, fighting Jesus “El Jinete” Cuellar, 29-3 (22), of Bueno Aires, ARG, for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Lightweight title.
The undercard looks like a good one with unbeaten boxers in individual matches Brian “El Boxing” Castano, 15-0-1, of Bueno, ARG, Ranfis “En Salada” Javier Encarnacion, 16-0, of DR, and the Russell brothers Gary Antuanne, 11-0 and Gary Antonio at 15-0.
