At the Lamax Stadium, Stevenage, Herfordshire, UK, Frank Warrens Queensbury Promotions featured former WBO World Middleweight champion southpaw Billy Joe “Superb” Saunders, of Hatfield, Herfordshire, Shefat Isufi, of Serb, Munich, Germany, for the vacant WBO World Super Middleweight title, over ESPN+ Saturday.
Former WBO World Middleweight champion southpaw Billy Joe “Superb” Saunders, 28-0 (13), of Hatfield, Herfordshire, easily defeated No. 1 contender Shefat Isufi, 27-4-2 (20), of Serb, Munich, Germany, for the vacant WBO World Super Middleweight title over 12 rounds.
In the first and second rounds southpaw Saunders with his right hand to his side boxes well. This continued through the third through the fifth round. In the sixth round Isufi landed a right on the tope of the head of Saunders hurting him. Saunders wobbled back against the ropes until the bell sounded.
In the seventh round Saunders seemed to clear his head and came back boxing well. In the eighth round Saunders kept backing up Isufi with his jab. In the tenth round Saunders continued boxing Isufi who plodded after him. In the eleventh round Saunders started showboating knowing he was well ahead.
In the twelfth and final round Saunders danced around the ring occasionally landing a straight left to the chin of Isufi. How Isufi ever became the No. 1 contender only the WBO knows why.
Scores were 120-108, 117-111, and 118-110 while this writer had it 119-109.
“It was my first 12 rounder at 168. Let’s get it together Zurdo Ramirez. I’ve been out for five months (Isufi for 10 months). I want to thank Frank Warren. I hope we can make the (WBA champ Callum) Smith fight,” said Saunders.
In the co-feature Super Bantamweight Brad “The Blade” Foster, 11-0-1 (9), of Lichfield, Staffordshite, UK, stopped Ashley Lane, 13-9-2 (1), of Bristol, Avon, UK, for the Commonwealth (British Empire) title, at 2:58 of the twelfth round.
Heavyweight Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce, 9-0 (9), of Putney, London, UK, knocked out Russian Alexander “The Great” Usinov, 34-4 (25), out of Minsk, Belarus, at 1:55 of the third round.
In the first two rounds Joyce had his way. In the third round Joyce knocked out Ustinov with a left hook dropping him to his knees for the full count.
