It’s been a busy year for boxing. This writer came up with three names of world champions that should be considered the 2018 Fighter of the Year. Let’s look them over and see what we think.

#2 Oleksandr Usyk, 16-0 (12), of Kiev, UKR, now holds the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF Cruiserweight titles was 3-0 in 2018.

In January as the WBO champion he added the WBC title defeating Mairis Briedis, 23-0, of Latvia, by majority decision. In July he added the IBF and WBA titles defeating Murat “Iron” Gassiev, 26-0, of Russia winning all 12 rounds on one scorecard and 119-109 on two of the scorecards. In November he defeated former WBC champion Tony “Bomber” Bellow, 30-2-1, of the UK, by stoppage in 8 rounds.

#3 Mikey Garcia, 39-0 (20), of Moreno Valley, CA, WBC World Lightweight and IBF World Super Welterweight Champion. He went 2-0 in 2018. In March he defeated IBF World Super Welterweight Champion KAZ Sergey “Samurai” Lipinets, 13-0, of Beverly Hills, CA, over 12 rounds for his title. In July he added the IBF World Lightweight title defeating Robert Easter Jr., 21-0, adding that title to his WBC title.

#1 Ukranian Vasily “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko, 12-1 (9), of Oxnard, CA, WBA & WBO World Lightweight champion went 2-0 in 2018. In May he won the WBA World title from Jorge “El Nino de Oro Golden Boy” Linares, 44-3, stopping him in 10 rounds. In December he unified his WBA title defeating WBO champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza, 25-1, of Cidra, PR, over 12 rounds.
