AAIB Boxers Scholarship Application
There are over 28,000 registered amateur boxers in America. Every day, these young men and women step into boxing gyms while facing tremendous obstacles. In the ring, they have their first experiences with self-control, self-analysis, and ultimately, self-worth.
AAIB Scholarships provide the only financial assistance in the country to high school seniors who wish to attend one of the few elite colleges with boxing programs. AAIB Scholars are hard-working students and community members as well as disciplined athletes.
AAIB Mission Statement
The American Association for the Improvement of Boxing, Inc. is a 501(c)(4) organization founded in 1969 by Rocky Marciano and Steve Acunto. In association with the AAIB Boxers Assistance Corporation, a 501(c)(3) organization, it provides funding for scholarships to boxers who are high school graduates and who have been accepted by a bonified college, provides funds to destitute boxers; and publishes and distributes instructional information on the science of boxing and boxing safety. Each entity is comprised solely of volunteers.
Over the last four years, the AAIB distributed over $116,000 for boxers to continue their higher education. The need for a scholarship for boxers is unique. A variety of private, governmental, and institutional sources in this country already provide aid based on academics, financial need, and athletics. Athletes who excel in many sports, such as basketball and football, often receive scholarships due to the college’s support of that particular sport. However, there are very few collegiate boxing programs in this country. Therefore, there is little financial assistance for the stand-out amateur boxer who wants to attend college. As a result, although the amateur boxer might excel in his or her craft, a scholarship is virtually unattainable and the boxer is denied financial assistance.
The AAIB looks to fill this void for the amateur boxer. The AAIB Boxers Assistance Corporation scholarship will be for amateur boxers meeting the following criteria:
- The applicant must be a current or former amateur boxer in the United States who has been accepted by a bonified college or university.
- The students must sign a waiver authorizing the school to release records to be reviewed by the scholarship committee.
- The individuals will be evaluated in the following areas:
- Athletics: Awards, honors, or achievements in the area of athletics.
- Academics: Awards, honors, or achievements in the area of academics.
- Community Involvement: Services performed for charitable or other community organizations.
- Financial Need: Necessity for financial assistance will also be examined.
Here’s a web site that will explain most of what your looking for – http://www.aaib.org/
It was start by Steve Acunto and Rocky Marciano back in the late 1960’s.
You could go to the following web sites and read about all the AAIB Board members – http://www.aaib.org/about/ – plus some of the 14 Scholorship winners from last year – http://www.aaib.org/scholars/
Again, the scholarships are given out to any High School Senior who has accepted by an accredited College or University. It is also given out to anyone that is in College right now, several have received the award in the last few years.
All the winners are invited to the AAIB CELEBRITY GOLF INVITATIONAL and the Awards Dinner & a Sports Auction afterwards. We would like for the winners to come to the dinner But it is not mandatory, as some of the winners will most likely live across the country. We did have someone from California win the last few years.
