Errol Spence, Jr. Knocks Out Leonard Bundy in IBF Eliminator!

Errol Spence, Jr., 21-0 (18), Desoto, TX, knocked out Leonard Bundu, 31-2-2 (12), Sierra Leon now out of Florence, IT, at 1:05 of the sixth round. This was an elimination bout to fight for the IBF welterweight title.

The event was held at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island Boardwalk, NY, over NBC promoted by PBC Promotions.

In the opening round it was all Spence using his jab effectively on the shorter Bundu plus with occasional right upper cuts. Bundu seemed to have a problem getting inside. Both are southpaws with Bundu switching to orthodox on several occasions. In round two it was more of the same with Bundu the aggressor but eating jabs and right hooks. In the third round Bundu pushes Spence to start the round while Spence is going to the body with both hands. It was a better round for Bundu but not enough to take the round.

In the fourth round Spence continues to outland the 41 year-old Bundu who when he does switch to orthodox he isn’t effective.

In the sixth round Spence drops Bundu with a left upper cut to the mid-section. Upon rising Bundu is almost defenseless as Spence knocks him out with a left uppercut to the body followed by a right hook to the head. Referee Johnny Callas didn’t have to count as Bundu lay under the bottom rope in a neutral corner.

“Yes sir I was going for the knockout. He was very awkward but I broke him out. I want a shot at Kell Brooks IBF welterweight title. He’s scheduled to fight GGG and I hope he pulls out of it and fights me. I look for my opponent to be out on the canvas,” said Spence. Spence is the top contender in the IBF with Bundu ranked fifth. Spence was a member of the 2012 Olympic team.
