SERGIO MARTINEZ vs MIGUEL COTTO
“Who wants it most?”
by
Ricky Ray Taylor
Although I think this matchup could have been a bit more electrifying
had it taken place 4-years ago,
I refuse to complain about it.
With a combined record of 89-6-2
and a WIN percentage of 92%,
who’s complaining?
At 33, Miguel Cotto, the 2000 Olympic representative for Puerto Rico at 139 lbs,
is a certain Hall of Fame inductee.
He is one of the greatest amateur fighters
in Puerto Rico’s deep history of talented fighters
and is currently the most lucrative PPV fighter on the market.
With this fight, Cotto is attempting to become
the first Puerto Rican fighter to win world titles in 4-weight divisions.
Standing in Cotto’s way however is Sergio Martinez.
“Maravella” Martinez did not endure the typical path to pugilism
taken by most fighters.
He never laced up a pair of gloves until he was 20 years old
and only had 41 amateur fights. It was his extreme athleticism
which won the day for Martinez in nearly every sport he competed in
and Boxing was no different.
From soccer to cycling and now boxing, Sergio Martinez has been a champion.
Amidst his brief amateur career,
Martinez was a two-time Argentine champion
as well as an Inter-Continental champion.
He was a member of the Argentinian national team
competing in the World Championships in 1997.
Keep in mind that he turned professional only after his 41st amateur bout!
Ironically,
both Cotto and Martinez were KO’d by Antonio Margarito,
Cotto in ’07 and Martinez in 2000.
Martinez was defeated once more losing a razor-close
majority decision bout to Paul Williams.
In the rematch 3 ½ years later, Marvella scored perhaps the most vicious KO
in a decade nearly decapitating Williams in the second-round.
Cotto on the other hand would lose three more bouts in the course of 5-years,
one to Pacquaio,
one to Mayweather and respectively –
one to Austin Trout.
Just as the Boxing community began to turn the page on Miguel Cotto however,
he dissected and highly outgunned a solid “B”-fighter in Delvin Rodriguez last October.
So, here we go –
June 7th, on Pay Per View but taking place right here in MSG:
Sergio Martinez
vs
Miguel Cotto
WBC World Middleweight Championship
