Went by myself, got there early and set up shop. Sorry, no diner, but did do gourmet hot dogs on South St, Ringside buzz about Paterno’s death was premature. They almost announced his death at 9PM!!! No, no, no, not cool. Calmer heads prevailed.
Running time – 7:17 to 11:09 Six bouts. Refs – Gary Rosato, Blair Talmedge and Steve “Sextuple” Smoger. Judges – Weisfeld, A. Rubenstein, Joe Pasquale and Dewey LaRosa alternated. TK – Jimmy Mina. TV – NBC Sports Network (Shown on Comcast cable outlets) Announcing crew – Freddy Roach, B J Flores., and Kenny Rice (as lead man)
BRYANT JENNINGS, 220, Phila., vs southpaw MAURICE BYARM, 244 1/2, born and raised in Phila., now lives in D.C.; Set for ten. For state HW title.(originally for the vacant interim emeritus youth WBS title but calmer heads prevailed.)
Both unbeaten going in. So what? Winner: BJ W-10U (96-94 twice; 97-93). Much closer than I at 98-92. Neither ever past six before.BJ just wanted it more. Sure he slapped alot but his work rate was clearly higher agst a too soft MB who couldn’t compete on the energy level. No KD’s, but overall an enjoyable HW bout.
GABRIEL ROSADO 153 1/2, Phila. vs JESUS SOTO-KARASS, 154, LOS
MOCHIS, MX.. Set for 8. Winner: GR by TKO at 2:06 of round five. No
KD’s but GR dominates, except for brief body attack early round three
by JSK, who also got cut left eye in same (?) round. GR pins JSK in
Rosado’s corner and drills him; Ref Steve Smoger jumps in. Good
stoppage. Maybe JSK gave up too much size as GR, smooth, sharp and
quick, shows other Philly fighter, Mike Jones, how to get the job done.
SULLIVAN BARRERA, 174 1/2, Cuba/Miami, vs DAMAR SINGLETON, 176 1/2,
Toledo. Set for 6.Winner: SB W-6U (60-54 twice; 59-55). No KD’s; not
much. This one also made TV – just filler.
Slender southpaw RAY ROBINSON, 148 1/2, Phila., vs DOEL
CARRASQUILLO, 149,
Lancaster, PA. – set for 8. Why oh why. Just as expected. Winner: RR
W-8U as the skinny stinker just moves and moves agst slow stalking DC
who can only hope for (and sometimes he gets it) a lucky right hand to
even things out; not tonight. Scores: 78-74 twice; 79-73 (me too)
JOSE MANGU ALEJO, 145, Jersey City, vs LENWOOD DOZIER, 146,
Glen
Burnie, MD. – six. Winner: JMA W-6U (all 60-54). No KD’s. JMA grunts
and presses but lacks any kind of punch. Makes no difference as LD
plays it cool and lazy anyway.
NAIM NELSON, 137 1/2, Phila., vs the squat and debuting PEDRO
ANDRES, 136,
Mexico/Bridgeton, N.J. – four rds.. Winner: NN W-4U (all 40-36). No
KD’s; good action
Next up: Either Phila or A.C. on January 28.
