LOS ANGELES, November 29 – One of the East Coast’s most exciting and well-known fighters, middleweight prospect Fernando Guerrero has been packing venues for the last few years, building a grassroots following rarely seen in boxing these days. The promising 25-year-old from Salisbury, Maryland will now bring that following to our nation’s capital with his addition to the undercard of “Capital Showdown” which will feature Amir Khan defending his unified super lightweight world championship against Lamont Peterson on December 10 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
Fernando Guerrero’s addition to the event, which already features Washington, DC’s Lamont and Anthony Peterson as well as Brandywine, Maryland’s undefeated heavyweight prospect Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell, makes “Capital Showdown” top to bottom the one of the biggest cards ever to hit the DC area.
“I am excited to be getting back in the ring and fighting in the D.C./Maryland area,” said Guerrero. “I’m looking forward to putting on a great performance in front of all my fans.”
“Fernando Guerrero isn’t just a talented fighter,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “He’s also a young man who has connected with his fans in Maryland who are loyal to him in and out of the ring. We’re pleased to add him to the ‘Capital Showdown’ undercard where Fernando’s fans will not only get a chance to see him perform, but also have a chance to see a great world title fight in Khan vs. Peterson.”
A native of the Dominican Republic, Fernando Guerrero (21-1, 16 KO’s) moved with his family to Salisbury, Maryland as a child and it was there that he discovered the sport of boxing. A stellar amateur who won a National AAU tournament and competed in the 2008 Olympic trials, Guerrero turned professional in 2007. In 2008, he started fighting in his hometown of Salisbury and captivated the city with his affable personality and unforgettable ring performances. A former NABF and NABO middleweight titlist who has defeated Ishe Smith, Michael Walker and Saul Duran, Guerrero lost his lone professional bout in June when he dropped down to junior middleweight in a fight against Grady Brewer. Now once again fighting at middleweight, he expects to climb to the top in no time.
Guerrero will face Robert Kliewer (11-13-2, 5 KO’s) of St. Paul, Minnesota in an eight round middleweight fight on Dec. 10.
