I have to share this picture with all of you. On September 9th we started our New Jersey Diamond Glove Tournament and a young 8-year-old boy by the name of Anthony Vargas had to pull out. The reason was that Anthony has a baby brother who had to have open-heart surgery and the family had to leave the country to have this done. I re-scheduled the bout for last night but his baby brother was again rushed to a hospital in Philly. The doctor’s stated that his little brother would make it through alright, so Anthony with a heavy heart fought on the card last night in Plainfield.
He told me before he fought that he wanted to do this for his baby brother. Anthony came up a little short and came home with the runners-up Trophy. I was the ring announcer and after the bout I announced to the crowd of the ordeal Anthony was going through, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
Today when I got home from running the New Jersey Diamond Glove Tournament in Paterson, I received a E-Mail from Juan Vargas, Ahthony’s father, with this picture.
I have to admit, it brought me to tears and I am sure it will do the same to all of you..
We should all learn from this little boy, that winning isn’t everything, and that little baby will one day know how lucky he is to have a big brother that Loves him the way Anthony does.
