In a fight decried by pundits and observers alike, WBO welterweight belt holder and consensus pound for pound #1 Manny Pacquiao showed why he was an overwhelming favorite in a 12 round white wash against an aging Sugar Shane Mosley Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in front of a sold out crowd of over 16,000 people. Those in attendance laid out their share of boos, as Sugar Shane fought a mostly defensive fight, with Pacquiao doing the stalking.
The first 2 rounds were your typical feeling out process, but a straight left hand by Pacquiao in the 3rd sent Mosley to the canvas. Dazed and somewhat confused, that punch appeared to have convinced Mosley that he didn’t want to engage the way he promised leading up to the bout. For the remaining rounds, Mosley moved away and seemed that he only wanted to last the distance. He had his best moment in an unusual Kenny Bayless error, scoring a knockdown off of a push and a trip. This only angered the Pinoy puncher, as he went after Mosley aggressively. It was no matter, Mosley wasn’t going to get stopped. He also wasn’t going to win.
After the judges’ cards were tallied, Pacquiao was declared the winner by scores of 120-107, 120-108 and 119-108.
Afterward, Pacquiao would cite leg cramps as the reason he was not able to have more offensive success, and that he expected Mosley to go toe to toe with him. The only question that remains is: who can give Pacquiao a challenge at welter weight? There might be one person, but he’s on vacation.
In undercard action, Mexican brawler Jorge Arce rejuvenated his career with an upset win over previously undefeated WBO 122 pound titlist Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. After an action packed affair chock full of action, a determined Arce scored a stoppage victory at 55 seconds of round 12. He moved to 57-6-2, and now has the option of continuing on fighting meaningful fights.
