Reality Show Update, Mayweather, Jr. Turns in Worst Score
By: Christopher Roche
As if Boxing is not dramatic enough on its own, one of the sport’s biggest stars felt the need to enter a reality show, while in training for a fight.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars”, which is a reality show based on pairing celebrities and pseudo celebs with real dancers. Similar to “American Idol”, the audience gets to vote for the winners, and the voting tally is generally much higher than the amount of votes cast for President of the United States. Unlike “Idol”, however, “Dancing with the Stars” also takes into account the judge’s scores when tallying the eliminations.
Mayweather, Jr.’s debut tonight was very shaky. In the behind the scenes footage, Mayweather, Jr. threatened to walk off the show. Then he had a dramatic change of heart. He swore that he would train for this like he does for a fight, and he would do whatever his partner told him. In his best Tiki Barber impression, Mayweather flashed an amazingly perfect smile over and over, as he tried to win back his partner and the fans. After all his talk and posturing, he turned in the worst score among the male contestants tonight.
Ricky Hatton fans around the world are probably toasting with a pint and laughing. I am sure they hope this under whelming performance by Mayweather, Jr. tonight will carry over into the ring on December 8.
Somehow I doubt that we have heard the last from Mayweather the dancer. If he survives the first cut, he will heat up in the later rounds just like he did against the likes of De La Hoya and Judah.
Anyway, my excuse for watching “Dancing with the Stars” tonight is that my wife had the remote, and I had to do “research” for this story. What is your excuse???
Up next on the reality docket tonight is “The Contender 3″…I just hope boxers do not revive “The Apprentice” next. It would be tough watching Donald evaluate the skills of Zab Judah as a project manager.
