Former welterweight champ Zab “Super” Judah had not won in over two years. In that time the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, MS suffered massive devastation from Hurricane Katrina, but both came back tonight in a positive fashion.
The Casino reopened two months ago, and Judah came in looking to provide some fireworks. However, veteran Edwin Vazquez had other ideas for Judah, as he roughed up the former champ into a ten round decision.
Judah looked to set up his counter left in the early part of the night, and he landed some hard uppercuts, but Vazquez kept his defense tight and landed some good left jabs of his own. Vazquez also popped Judah with a hard headbutt that opened up a cut over Judah’s left eye in the middle rounds. Judah was visibly bothered by the cut and wiped blood away on several occasions, however, he would not be denied the victory.
Judah, who said he hurt his left hand in the bout, outworked his limited foe for a unanimous decision win, and he got back in the green column after a 27 month dry spell. The final scores were 97-93, 98-93, 100-90. The 29 year-old Judah improved to 35-5, 25 KO’s, while Vazquez, 35, fell to 22-11, 8 KO’s.
In undercard action, super prospect Lamont Peterson, 22-0, 10 KO’s, stopped overmatched Frankie Santos via a retirement after six rounds. In the opening bout of the telecast, heavyweight Adam “The Swamp Donkey” Richards won in a sloppy affair by disqualification over Rafael Pedro.
