Tourney to turn kids away from drugs and gangs rocks at Robert Treat Hotel

Newark, NJ- Mayor Cory A. Booker and Council Vice President Luis Quintana will welcome 31 youngsters from the Caribbean to the city of Newark this weekend to compete in a boxing tournament.

The young athletes from Jamaica, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, will compete in the International Amateur Boxing Tournament taking place at the Robert Treat Hotel beginning Saturday, April 28 and concluding with a championship match on Monday, May 1.

Some of the athletes will arrive from the Bahamas (via North Carolina) at Newark Liberty International Airport. Coaches and others arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, will land at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

This initiative was sparked two years ago when Councilman-At-Large Luis Quintana took 40 youth boxers to Puerto Rico for a boxing tournament.
