Saturday night in Santo Domingo
SANTO DOMINGO (February 20, 2007) – World-rated super featherweight Guadalupe “Bronco” Rosales headlines Saturday night’s (Feb. 24) “Boxing At The Coliseum,” a professional boxing series showcasing Dominican Republic prospects, at the Carlos “Teo” Cruz Coliseum in Santo Domingo. The boxing card will be immediately followed by a concert featuring local performers.
Mexican and Mundo Hispano champion Rosales, (22-1, 13 KOs), rated No. 4 by the World Boxing Council and No. 12 by the World Boxing Organization, fights Dominican native Elvis Martinez in the 10-round main event.
“I feel comfortable fighting in the Dominican or anywhere else,” Rosales said from training camp in New York City. “I just love fighting. I haven’t fought in six month and need a good tune-up. After this fight I’ll be more active and I’d love to get a shot at Rocky Juarez. He’s had his tune-up and I’m having mine. I’m rated No. 4 (WBC) and he’s No. 5. It will be a very interesting fight. Then I’d like Humberto Soto before I become the ‘Philippino Destroyer.’ They call Manny Pacquiao the “Mexican Destroyer.” I want to beat his brother, Bobby, first and then him. The I’ll be the one and only ‘Philippino Destroyer.’
“Growing up in Mexico I idolized Julio Cesar Chavez. I used to be a typical Mexican brawler but now I’m a boxer and brawler, a mix between Chavez and Marco Antonio Barrera, another one of my idols. I’m using my jab and moving a lot more, but what I really like to do is bang the body. I love smacking my opponent’s body.”
Guzman Entertainment, Inc. is presenting “Boxing At The Coliseum” in association with local promoters in the 7,000-seat, two-leveled Carlos “Teo” Cruz Coliseum that has a theater-in-the-round design with no virtually poor viewing areas.
Undefeated Dominican junior welterweight Eury Gonzalez (13-0 (9 KOs) takes on Jhovanny Ascencio in the six-round co-feature. On the undercard in six-round bouts, junior featherweight Joe Parra (5-2, 1 KO) faces Carlos Fulgencio (5-0 2 KOs), super middleweight Wilson Santana (5-0, 3 KOs) tangles with Puerto Rican prospect Julio Carcia (1-0, 1KO). Also scheduled to fight in four-round matches is junior welterweight Anthony Lora (1-0) vs. Ramon Martinez (0-1) and super featherweight Jose Guzman (2-0, 1 KO), younger brother of WBO super featherweight title-holder Joan Guzman, has been added to the card against an opponent to be determined. All bouts and fighters are subject to change.
