On Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Jorge Arce of Mexico won a unanimous 12-round decision over Julio Ler of Argentina. With no knockdowns in the fight, Arce won with scores of 117-110 by two judges and 117-109 from the other.
Arce who came to the ring riding on the back of a horse, almost scored a knockdown in the 11th, when he staggered Ler with a solid left hand. Ler remained on his feet through out the bout, but fought a style that was trying to survive rather than trying to win.
Ler was tough but Arce had his number and answers for Ler’s style. Often Ler would cut and run with his hands down or up against the ropes in a defensive mode. Arce tried to knock Ler out in the final round, but again Ler would survive.
In a co-featured 12-round middleweight bout, Kelly Pavlik knocked out Jose Luis Zertuche of Mexico at 1:40 of the eighth round.
After a close and exciting 4 rounds, Pavlik would start taking over and late in the 6th he floored Zertuche with a right hand late in the sixth. In the 8th round, Pavlik knocked him out with a right.
