Special Championship Belts to Be Presented Honoring Former World Champion, Bobby Czyz and the late Joseph Ascoli
BLOOMFIELD, NJ (November 1, 2016) On Friday, November 4th, 2016. Title Boxing Club Wayne will be hosting their second annual Friday Night Fights at Bloomfield High School located at 160 Broad Street in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
TITLE Boxing Club’s owners often look for ways to give back to the community and this year they continue the partnership with the Bloomfield Police Benevolent Association to bring a great night of amateur boxing to Bloomfield to benefit first responders who suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Post-traumatic stress is defined as a type of stress encountered at incidents that are, or are perceived as, capable of causing serious injury or death. First responders, by the very nature of their jobs are exposed to more stress and trauma in one day than most people will experience in a considerable amount of time.
Title Boxing Club of Wayne, has sponsored other fundraising events such as for Boxing for Boobies for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Knock Out Autism for Autism Awareness Month, The Super Hero 5K Run for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children), Knockout Bullying and several other events in the past. Owner, Jose Montalvo, takes pride in putting on a quality night of amateur boxing where the boxers have the opportunity to compete in front of a very supporting crowd for a great cause. Montalvo stated, “It is a lot of work, but I have a great team, and it is well worth the effort when I see how much we can give back to those in need”.
This year, Sgt. Zepeda, Det. Jennifer Horn and Police Officer Alex Rosales will be representing the Bloomfield Police Department. Officers from the Burlington Sheriff’s Department, Nutley Police Department and even an attorney,
Dan Serratelli, from the Newark Prosecutor’s Office will compete. There will also be many other amateur boxers from all over the Tri-State Area participating.
If that’s not enough, Former World Light-heavyweight and Cruiserweight champion Bobby “Chappy” Czyz signed up to be in attendance as a special guest. He is scheduled to judge some bouts and present the “Bobby Czyz Championship Belt” for the Most Exciting Fight of the Night. Czyz was always a huge crowd favorite and exciting fighter during his 18-year professional career.
Czyz is a Wanaque, NJ native who was known for always being exciting in the ring. Turning pro as a middleweight in 1980, he competed in every weight class from middleweight to heavyweight from 1980 to 1998. In Bobby’s second to last fight of his career he was giving Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield a very competitive fight until the fight was stopped due to an injury. In Holyfield’s next fight he would end up pulling off a huge upset in knocking out “Iron” Mike Tyson.
A special championship belt will be awarded to the best boxing performance of the night by any police/law enforcement officer in honor of the late Joseph Ascoli who served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Born in Jersey City he lived in North Arlington and East Rutherford before moving to Clark in 2014. Joe was a true patriot and a fighter. He was a guy who stopped by the cemetery on Memorial Day to straighten the flags on servicemen’s graves, and paid homage at the Vietnam Memorial every Veteran’s Day. Joe saw action as a squad leader in Vietnam during the sixties.
That experience went on to haunt him for decades, the nightmares, the gunfire in the night, it came back night after night for fifty years. Joe fought it off, running every day to push past the sleepless nights.
He trained relentlessly and painfully in his forties, fifties and sixties to represent the Marine Corps at 15 marathons including the New York Marathon. His last marathon was the Philadelphia Marathon in 2012, while enduring surgeries to repair his broken feet and worn-out knees. Meanwhile, his love of country led him to attempt to reenlist in his fifties to support his fellow Marines after the 911 attacks.
Joe went on to have a very successful career, as the long-time Vice President at Charmer Industries in New York, NY and later as a successful attorney, but unfortunately, the pain never did let go, but in fact got worse with time. The drums stopped for Joe last July, but his legacy as a straight-up guy who fought for his country, his friends and himself will endure.
This event is sanctioned by the New Jersey Association of USA Boxing. USA Boxing enables athletes and coaches to achieve sustained competitive excellence, develop character, support the sport of boxing, and promote and grow Olympic style boxing in the United States.
