Jones, Jr. calls out Calzaghe on the Broadcast, & he predicts a fourth round stoppage over Trinidad.

Dominick Guinn appeared set to storm back to relevancy in the heavyweight division. He recently aligned himself with ace trainer Ronnie Shields, and he lined up a late replacement opponent who is not a puncher. However, Guinn could not pull the trigger tonight, and he got outworked by tough Philadelphian Robert Hawkins.
Guinn looked lazy and uninterested during most of the ten round Main Event from British Columbia. Ronnie Shields, during an in-fight interview with Teddy Atlas and Joe Tessitore, said Guinn was not doing what they had worked on in the gym, namely creating distance in the center of the ring. Hawkins aggression inside allowed him to land enough looping shots and uppercuts to win rounds and thus the fight. Hawkins, 37, improved to 23-10, 7 KO’s. The 32 year-old Guinn of Houston, TX, dropped to 28-6-1, 19 KO’s.
Co-Feature & Swing Bout
In the co-feature, 40 year-old Darrell Woods was shocked by late sub Louis Sargeant. Woods appeared unsteady almost from the opening bell, and Sargeant dropped Woods halfway through the first. Sargeant kept the pressure on, and the bout was stopped after the fourth round. Woods dropped to 26-12, 18 KO’s, and Sargeant improved to 9-11-2, 2 KO’s.
The swing bout featured the comeback of 28 year-old Byron Tyson, who was out for two years because of shoulder surgery. Tyson, 9-0-1, 4 KO’s looked fairly sharp against a sloppy opponent in Claudio Ortiz. Once Ortiz knew he was overmatched, he repeatedly fouled Tyson, and Ortiz even took a knee without being touched. Finally, the referee stopped the bout in the fourth round and DQ’d Ortiz for his antics.
Overall, it was a mixed bag of boxing with two upsets and one very sloppy affair. Fortunately, Roy Jones, Jr. was the studio guest. He and Brian Kenny mentioned that Joe Cortez did a bad job in the first four rounds of Mayweather vs. Hatton, and Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas completely agreed. The phrase “over officious” was coined.
Two other interesting notes from the broadcast were Jones, Jr. predicting a fourth round stoppage over Felix Trinidad on January 19, and he also said that on January 20th he would buy his plane tickets for Cardiff, Wales, so he could fight Joe Calzaghe.
