ESPN’s FNF Returns Tonight: Guinn and Woods Featured

By: Christopher Roche

Friday Night Fights returns tonight from Vancouver, B.C. The season premier will feature, Dominick Guinn vs. Robert Hawkins, 10 rounds, heavyweights; Mark Woolnaugh vs. Darrell Woods, 8 rounds, super middleweights and Roy Jones Jr. in studio.

Robert Hawkins is a tough Philadelphia heavyweight who recently went the distance with David Tua and Jason Estrada. I was ringside for the Tua bout, and Hawkins took some hard shots from Tua, and a lesser chinned heavyweight would have been stopped in the 10th.

While Hawkins is basically a journeyman at this point, he did upset Terry Smith on the Taylor vs. Pavlik undercard, but he was uncharacteristically stopped in his last bout over in Germany. Guinn is a reputable heavyweight who has never been stopped, and most of his 5 losses have come against good competition. This fight will likely go the distance, and it will serve as a decent main event for a card sandwiched between the holidays.

The undercard features Darrell Woods, who was the winner of ESPN’s fight of the year in 2007. Woods defeated prospect Sam Miller in a thrilling majority decision back in March, but he followed that up by getting hammered by Allan Green. According to ESPN.com (above), Woods is scheduled to face Mark Woolnaugh, but boxrec.com has him listed to face one Louis Sargeant. I guess with boxing being boxing, we will find out who the opponent is when the bell rings.

The bouts are scheduled to be aired on ESPN2.
